Barcode Design Best Practices

6 min read

Size and Quiet Zones

Always maintain adequate quiet zones (blank space) around barcodes - at least 10x the width of the narrowest bar. Barcodes should be large enough for reliable scanning (minimum 0.8 inches wide).

Color Contrast

Use high contrast: dark bars on light background. Black on white is ideal. Avoid red bars (scanners use red light) and low-contrast combinations.

Printing Quality

  • Print at high resolution (300+ DPI)
  • Ensure bars are crisp and clear
  • Avoid printing on textured or reflective surfaces
  • Test scan before mass production

Placement

Place barcodes on flat surfaces away from folds or curves. Position at comfortable scanning height and angle.
