Barcode Design Best Practices
•6 min read
Size and Quiet Zones
Always maintain adequate quiet zones (blank space) around barcodes - at least 10x the width of the narrowest bar. Barcodes should be large enough for reliable scanning (minimum 0.8 inches wide).
Color Contrast
Use high contrast: dark bars on light background. Black on white is ideal. Avoid red bars (scanners use red light) and low-contrast combinations.
Printing Quality
- Print at high resolution (300+ DPI)
- Ensure bars are crisp and clear
- Avoid printing on textured or reflective surfaces
- Test scan before mass production
Placement
Place barcodes on flat surfaces away from folds or curves. Position at comfortable scanning height and angle.
